Infant Breastfeeding & Frenectomies

Nesconset Pediatric Dentist for Lip & Tongue Tie Surgery

In those early days of parenthood, few things feel more important (or more personal) than feeding your baby. If your infant is having trouble latching, feeding for long stretches, or seems unusually fussy or gassy after nursing, a tongue-tie or lip-tie could be the cause. A simple procedure called a frenectomy may help.

At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we specialize in gentle, laser frenectomies for infants, supporting better breastfeeding outcomes and easing the strain on both baby and parent. Whether you’ve been referred by a lactation consultant, pediatrician, or are just starting to suspect a feeding issue, we’re here with answers and support.

How Are Frenectomies & Breastfeeding Related?

Feeding your newborn should feel natural but for many families, it quickly becomes a source of stress. If your baby is having trouble latching, feeding for long periods without satisfaction, or you’re experiencing pain while nursing, a lip- or tongue-tie may be the underlying issue. These tight bands of tissue (called restrictive frenulums) can prevent your baby from feeding effectively, impacting weight gain, milk supply, and bonding.

A frenectomy in Nesconset can make all the difference. This quick, gentle laser procedure releases the tight tissue, allowing your baby to latch deeper and nurse more efficiently. At Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, we support parents through every step of the process, working closely with lactation consultants and pediatricians to ensure you’re getting the right care for your child.

Pearls of Wisdom, FAQs Answered

Many older children need a frenectomy when the tissue connecting the lip or tongue pulls improperly on the gums. This may result in gingival (gum) recession and difficulty brushing. Some children need a frenectomy in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to allow adult teeth to come together for better aesthetics. Other children need a frenectomy to aid in proper speech and swallowing.

Frenectomies can be performed in many ways: scalpel, scissors, and diode laser (or CO2 laser). When we perform a frenectomy with the CO2 laser at Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental, it is virtually painless and very quick. For some older children, we may numb the area first.

A lingual frenectomy should be done when the tissue under the tongue causes problems with feeding, speech, or swallowing. A frenectomy should not be done just because one may see the frenum. Often our doctors suggest not doing the procedure, waiting, or following up with a lactation specialist or speech therapist.

Because a laser frenectomy can be done very quickly, children are not typically put to sleep in our office.
