Holistic dentistry, as we practice it, recognizes the interconnectedness of dental health with overall physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Our approach goes beyond treating dental issues; we view ourselves as healers with a responsibility to enhance overall wellness and prevent disease. Committed to patient education, we see ourselves as partners in your child’s care. A healthy smile increases confidence.

Guided by the Holistic Dental Association’s 1978 principles, our holistic dentistry emphasizes:

  • Proper nutrition to prevent or reverse dental disease
  • Elimination of toxic dental materials
  • Prevention and treatment of bite problems
  • Prevention and treatment of gum disease

Adhering to the latest American Dental Association best practices, we refrain from endorsing treatments lacking solid scientific support. Our focus is on shifting dentistry from disease treatment to prevention, promoting overall health.

We welcome discussions about our philosophy and approach, encouraging you to call our office with any questions.

Understanding Holistic Pediatric Dentistry:

Holistic pediatric dentistry takes an integrative approach to your child’s oral health, recognizing the impact of oral health on overall well-being. We strive to prevent cavities and gum disease, considering the broader aspects of your child’s health, including sleep, feeding, and speech.

Mercury-Free Pediatric Dentistry:

We prioritize mercury-free pediatric dentistry by using composite fillings instead of traditional amalgam fillings. These white, safer fillings seamlessly blend with your child’s teeth.

Differences From Regular Pediatric Dentistry:

Our holistic pediatric dentistry places a greater emphasis on disease prevention through oral hygiene, nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. Our biomimetic approach aims to preserve the tooth, restoring its natural function, strength, and appearance when treatment is necessary.

Fillings Used By Holistic Pediatric Dentists:

We use safe composite and glass ionomer materials for dental fillings, often referred to as white fillings due to their natural color. All of our restorative materials are metal and BPA free.

Technology

We are always looking to take the minimum amount of x-rays to properly diagnose. Our x-ray units are state of the art digital as we take very seriously using the minimum amount of radiation.

No Injections!

We use lasers to clean out most cavities. This means, no shots, no numbing, no needles! Therefore we are trying to minimize injecting anything into the body. Most dental anesthetics have epinephrine in them which promotes a sympathetic “fight or flight” reaction.

It All starts With Sleep

As dentists we are trained to evaluate the oral cavity and head/neck. At night our body detoxifies, resets, and growth hormone is released. These are all important for everyday health. The better we breathe, the better we sleep, the better we function. We will screen your child and ask questions to make sure they are able to function to their optimal potential…and it all starts with sleep. Most dentists are tunnel visioned and just assess the teeth, we are interested in the WHOLE person….hence HOLISTIC.

Gluten Free, Dye Free, Latex Free

We like to keep allergies and inflammatory products out of the mouths of our patients. We source our products to be the healthiest they can be. Always feel free to ask for the fact sheet on any product we are using for your child. While we believe in fluoride use we also offer fluoride alternatives such as xylitol.

Growth and Development Evaluation

Each visit we provide what’s called anticipatory guidance for your child. This encompasses a growth and development evaluation. If we notice they have a high arched palate or a narrow arch we have an orthodontic team that can help. Right above the roof of the mouth is the floor of the nose. Therefore a high narrow palate can cause more ENT issues such as ear infections, colds, sinus infections etc. We will guide you in the right direction to make sure your child grows properly and functions properly. Orofacial development can be guided while we are young and we have board certified orthodontists who are experts in this.

Collaboration

We love to work with functional medicine and other healthcare providers. We constantly work with acupuncturists, chiropractors, holistic medical doctors, occupational therapists, myofunctional therapists just to name a few. If you have a medical provider you would like us to collaborate with please let us know. Treating your child with a team approach to collaborate with holistic minded doctors is very much in our wheel-house.

If you are on Long Island, consider pediatric holistic dentistry for your child’s overall health and wellbeing. Just call our office at Massapequa Park, Nesconset, or West Islip to schedule your child’s initial appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Holistic Dentistry

Holistic pediatric dentistry simply means taking a more integrative approach to your child’s oral health. We know that unhealthy teeth and gums can impact your child’s overall health and well-being; conversely, health conditions elsewhere in the body can cause oral problems. Our goal is to help your child achieve optimal health by preventing cavities and gum disease. We focus on the entire child including how the oral tissues may affect sleeping, feeding, and speech.

Mercury-free pediatric dentistry involves using alternatives to traditional amalgam fillings. Also known as metal or silver fillings, these restorations contain mercury, which is why it’s important to choose a pediatric dental practice that uses composite fillings instead. Composite fillings are safer and, because they’re white, blend in naturally with the rest of your child’s teeth.

We place a greater emphasis on the prevention of dental and gum disease through good oral hygiene habits, proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. When treatment is needed, we use a biomimetic approach that preserves as much of the tooth as possible and aims to restore its natural function, strength, and appearance.

We use safe composite material for dental fillings. These restorations are also referred to as white fillings because of their color.
