For many patients, accessing dental care can be challenging and may evoke fear. There may be several reasons for this, but we can offer a straightforward solution. Sedation dentistry enables our office to provide high-quality dentistry and oral surgery procedures in a more comfortable and accessible manner for patients who are fearful, young, or have special needs.
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It enables dental procedures to be performed in a safe environment, fostering a positive experience. This is especially true when patients require extensive dental treatment.
Typically, all dental work can be completed in one session while the patient is asleep. Sedation may be beneficial in reducing the gag reflex for sensitive patients, enabling them to remain calm and relaxed throughout the dental procedure. Sedation dentistry can provide patients with a more positive overall dental experience, which can lead to a lifelong decrease in dental anxiety.
We know no two smiles (or patients) are the same. That’s why we offer a range of safe, effective sedation methods to match your comfort level and procedure. There are different forms of sedation dentistry that our office can provide:
Nitrous oxide is a gas mixture of oxygen that the patient breathes in. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that is placed over the nose.
With nitrous oxide administration, the child remains awake, alert, and able to communicate freely. However, most children remain relaxed throughout the procedure. As nitrous oxide wears off quickly with minimal side effects, children can go directly to school or other activities.
While it is not a great idea to have a huge meal directly before any dental treatment, it is entirely safe to eat before and immediately after administering the nitrous oxide.
In our office, this type of sedation is performed by our board-certified MD anesthesiologist and their assistant. We utilize an outside team to provide hospital-quality care inside our location.
Our office has performed thousands of sedations using this method, and we typically reserve 3-5 days per month for this procedure. Most commonly, on a designated sedation day, several patients receive care. Your child’s start time is determined with the anesthesia team and the needs of each patient.
During IV sedation, your child will be completely asleep for all of the dental treatment. The IV sedation medications are administered and monitored by a board-certified MD anesthesiologist and their assistant. Your child is fully monitored with hospital-grade monitors and techniques. The procedure begins with no needles, and your child has no memory of any dental treatment.
Sedation may be recommended for children who:
Your child may be a bit drowsy. However, most children bounce back very quickly. You can rest with your child in our recovery room until the anesthesiologist feels it’s safe to go home. Usually, this is less than 30 minutes.
When we make our post-operative calls in the evening, most parents report that their children are already back to normal activity.
Due to the administration of anesthesia, it is required that your child is (NPO) on an empty stomach. For this reason, we start our cases as early as 6 AM. The anesthesia team will call you the day before and review these instructions with you exactly. If your child is a bit later in the day, the anesthesia team can create a customized plan that suits your child’s specific needs.
To ensure your child’s safety, as with any other surgical procedure, only the anesthesiologist and dental team are permitted to be present during the procedure.
However, you will return to the room to watch your child breathe through the mask and fall asleep. As soon as they wake up in the recovery room, you will be there as well.
Almost all children can resume school and normal activities the very next day.
Yes, however, the MD Anesthesiologist will review your child’s medical history and approve the case.
Yes! As they will be on an empty stomach, we recommend starting with more bland foods at first.

I can not say enough wonderful things about the team and the doctors. I was a new patient who called and given my situation, they were able to get me In the same day. The doctor was funny, informative, and was able to keep my child calm while he did the work that was needed.
