PEDIATRIC DENTAL EMERGENCIES FAQS

In general, a knocked out baby tooth is not as serious as a knocked out permanent tooth. A baby tooth can not be put back into the mouth. However, your child should still come to the office for an exam.

If this happens, call the office immediately if you have a tooth that is knocked out. The tooth needs to be kept in cold milk or Hank’s solution. The tooth needs to be placed back into position and stabilized with a wire. Always pick up the tooth by the base of the tooth, not the root. For the highest likelihood of success this should be done within one hour.

Call our office immediately if more than half of a tooth is broken off. Have your child rinse their mouth with lukewarm water and use a cold compress to bring down any swelling. If you can find the broken piece of tooth, place it in a small cup of cold milk and bring it to our office.

Applying pressure to the area with a clean washcloth or sterile gauze. Use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling once bleeding is controlled. If bleeding continues, call your child’s pediatrician or visit your local emergency room for treatment.

Have your child rinse their mouth with warm water, then gently floss around the affected tooth. In some instances, toothaches are caused by food particles lodged in the tissue around the tooth. Call our office to make an appointment.
